Overview
Passbolt is an open source password manager designed specifically for team collaboration, headquartered in Luxembourg. Founded in 2016 by Kevin Muller and Cedric Alfonsi, Passbolt was created to address the security gap in how teams share credentials. Unlike consumer-oriented password managers, Passbolt is built from the ground up for organizational use, with features like role-based access control, password sharing between team members, and detailed audit logs.
The platform uses OpenPGP-based end-to-end encryption, ensuring that passwords are encrypted on the client side and never accessible to the server or Passbolt's team. It offers a browser extension for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, a mobile app, a CLI tool, an API for automation, folder-based organization, password expiry policies, MFA support (TOTP and Duo), LDAP/Active Directory synchronization, and real-time notifications when credentials are shared or updated.
Passbolt is available as a free self-hosted Community Edition (AGPL licensed) and as paid Pro and Cloud editions with additional enterprise features. The self-hosted option gives organizations full control over their password vault, while the cloud edition is hosted on European infrastructure. Passbolt is used by IT teams, DevOps engineers, and security-conscious organizations across Europe who need a transparent, auditable password management solution that doesn't rely on proprietary US-based services.
