Overview

Nextcloud is a self-hosted file sync, share, and collaboration platform that gives users full control over their data. Originally forked from ownCloud in 2016 by founder Frank Karlitschek, Nextcloud has grown into a comprehensive productivity suite used by millions of individuals, enterprises, and government agencies across Europe and beyond.

The platform offers file synchronization across devices, real-time document editing through built-in office integration (Collabora Online or OnlyOffice), calendar and contacts management, video conferencing via Nextcloud Talk, and a rich ecosystem of over 300 apps. Nextcloud can be deployed on-premises or through certified hosting providers, ensuring organizations retain complete sovereignty over their data.

Nextcloud GmbH is headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany, and has become a flagship example of European open-source software. It is used by the German federal government, the French government, and numerous European institutions that require GDPR-compliant collaboration tools without reliance on US cloud providers.
